Dobsonfly
Scientific name: Corydalus cornutus (Linnaeus)
(Neuroptera: Corydalidae)
Facts: Dobsonfly is the adult form of a common aquatic immature called hellgramite. Hellgramites are aggressive predators found in flowing streams. They are good fish bait and are very often used as such. The adult forms are large winged insects which are attracted to lights. The male has extremely long mandibles, not particularly good for biting. However, these mandibles are used to grasp the female during mating. The female can be an effective biter if given the opportunity.
