Yellowjacket

Scientific name: Vespula maculifrons (Buysson)
(Hymenoptera: Vespidae)

Facts: The name yellowjacket causes much confusion because it is sometimes applied to the whole family. The eastern yellowjacket is one of the more common species in the east but it is replaced by other species in the south and in the west. Yellowjackets typically nest in the ground but they may nest in trees or structures. They collect caterpillars and other insects as a protein source for their larvae. They also forage for sweet substances like fruit and may both humans at picnics. Their sting is painful.
